Are You Feeding Your Cat The Wrong Cat Food?

Cats are highly at risk of developing health diseases due to improper diet, just like humans. They can get diabetes, arthritis, urinary tract diseases and even obesity. Since most cats in the city are kept indoors, they’ve become sedentary. They don’t get enough exercise. Because of this, you must learn to regulate their meals and make sure that they only get the right amount of food that they really need. Below are some of the things to avoid in planning your feline’s nutrition:

Do not overfeed. We are all aware how cute a fat, lazy cat can be but for their own health, you can’t let them get too big. Domesticated felines have a low daily nutritional requirement. Veterinarians recommend only 25 to 35 calories per pound in a given day. You better start counting those calories-for your cat that is. If you’re not sure how much you should feed your pet per day, go talk to your local veterinarian.

Do not feed only dry food. Felines are naturally not water-seeking creatures so they may end up ignoring the water your offer them. But this doesn’t mean that they do not need water. On the contrary, cats get serious urinary tract infection. You do not want your pet to go through the pain that UTI comes with. The best way to get water into your pet’s system is to feed them with wet food. Moist cat food is the way to go.

Do not feed your cat foods rich in carbohydrate. By nature, cats are carnivores. Meat generally consists of protein and not carbohydrates. Next time you go out to buy pet food, read the labels and make sure carbohydrate levels are low. Felines do not need carbohydrates in their system, they cannot digest it properly. This could potentially cause problems for your furry friends.

Do feed your cat meals rich in animal-based protein. This goes back to the previous point that felines are carnivores. They need proteins that come from animals. Proteins from plants digest differently. Stop trying to turn your cat into a vegetarian; it is not good for their health.

Feed your pets a balanced diet that is appropriate for them. Just like how we should watch our diet, we should also be concerned about our cat’s diet. Giving them just whatever might cause a deficiency or an imbalance in their system. Different cats require different kind of nutrition. If ever you are not sure about what kind of food to provide your pets, it is always better to talk to your veterinarian.
